Campers are broken up into small groups of about three with a swim instructor. They are level tested and divided into the appropriate group. This ensures they are learning the necessary skills and can improve throughout the summer. As the summer progresses, the campers skills are continuously evaluated and hopefully they will be able to advance to the next level. Each camper must pass the deep-water challenge in order to receive a green bracelet and swim in the deep end. If a child does not pass, they must wear a red bracelet and swim in the shallow end. This activity usually runs for about 1/2 of a full period. All skills are based on the Red Cross mandates. Junior Campers use the smaller and more shallow pools while progressing through levels such as guppy and goldfish.

**Deep water challenge - 4 laps back and forth: prior to touching the wall on the 4th lap, the camper must tread water for 30 seconds. Lifeguards are there in case the camper needs help and cannot complete the challenge.
